Source: Foto Fischer By Barbara Gigler - Energy-intensive industries (EIIs) must drastically reduce their dependence on fossil fuels if the EU is to be climate neutral by 2050. A consortium consisting of representatives from industry, interest groups and science present solutions on how to switch to 100 per cent renewable energies. The steel, chemical, pulp and paper and cement industries - subsumed under the term energy-intensive industry or EII - have a key role to play on the path to climate neutrality by 2050. currently accounts for half of the energy consumption of all industry and, due to its energy-intensive production processes, is responsible for 14 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions in the. The -funded multinational and multi-sectoral research project RE4Industry - 100% Renewable Energies for Energy Intensive Industries - is developing scenarios and solutions on how EIIs can make a smooth and safe transition to 100% renewable energies in production processes and facilities.
