Your personal sphere of play:

The Austrian EIRENE-AT node is searching for a senior scientist and a manager to lead the "Exposome Austria Non-targeted Lab".

This position in the field of bioanalytical chemistry is dedicated to the development of innovative mass spectrometry-based workflows and data evaluation tools. The developed methods will be applied to address pressing research questions at the edge of environmental/food contaminants and human health.

Your future position will be at the national coordinating institution of the Austrian EIRENE-AT node (Exposome Austria) at the Institute of Food Chemistry and Toxicology, Faculty of Chemistry. 
You will work in the framework of large-scale EU projects and are expected to collaborate with European partners. In addition to research, this position includes teaching in accordance with the collective agreement and supervising students. 

The position is initially limited to 1 year with the option of subsequent permanent employmen.

Your future tasks:

Specifically, you will be involved in research, teaching, and administration. This means:

  • You will lead the "Exposome Austria Non-targeted Lab".
  • You will further develop the analytical services of the Exposome Austria Research Infrastructure.
  • You will execute administrative tasks in lab and infrastructure management, research, and teaching.
  • You will build an independent research profile in exposome research and in the field of metabolomics.
  • You will contribute to research projects and scientific studies.
  • You will publish internationally and give presentations.
  • You will apply for projects and acquire third-party funding.
  • You will prepare and complete a habilitation suitable for publication.
  • You will independently teach courses in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement.
  • You will supervise students throughout their academic progress.
  • You will participate in evaluation measures and quality assurance.


This is part of your personality: 

  • Completed doctoral/PhD degree in analytical, biological, food, or computational chemistry, biotechnology, or related fields
  • Experience in mass spectrometry and scientific publishing
  • Experience in newborn screening research programs
  • Hands-on experience with the operation and management of high-resolution (HR) mass spectrometry instruments
  • Prior experience with microsampling (e.g. dried blood spots) is an advantage
  • Research competence and initiative demonstrated through international publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals
  • Service management experience related to ESFRI research infrastructure services
  • Experience in research management and in leading project staff
  • Professional interaction with clients from academic, scientific, and industrial environments
  • Didactic skills/experience in e-learning
  • IT skills (e.g., basic programming skills in R, experience with the usage of OS from mass spectrometer manufacturers, such as Sciex or Thermo Fisher)
  • Excellent English skills (C1)
  • Team player with strong social and communication skills
  • High level of self-motivation, commitment, and work ethics
  • Willingness to travel and cooperate
