TU Wien will present its innovative strength and scientific excellence at EXPO 2025 in Osaka, Japan. In line with the motto of the Austrian Pavilion "Composing the future", pioneering research projects will be presented from April 13 to October 13, 2025. Furthermore, the long-standing cooperation with Japanese partners will also be intensified.
Strengthening cooperation with Japan
Participating in EXPO 2025 marks a milestone in over 40 years of cooperation between TU Wien and Japanese institutions, which has been coordinated by the Japan Austria Science Exchange Center ( JASEC ) since 2015. This cooperation will be further strengthened by the presence at the world exhibition.Japan is a technologically highly developed country with extensive expertise in areas such as robotics, AI and nanotechnology as well as in architecture and construction technology (e.g. timber construction, earthquake safety). At the same time, the significant cultural differences between Japan and Europe offer new perspectives on problems that can serve as a catalyst for innovation. "These aspects make Japan a valuable partner for technological cooperation and offer numerous opportunities for mutual learning and innovation," explains Iris Mach, Head of the Strategic Cooperation Centers at TU Wien.
Focus on innovative projects
TU Wien will exhibit a total of ten projects from the fields of Research & Education, Life Sciences, Health, Green Tech and Creative Industries in the Austria Pavilion’s Innovation Lab. These demonstrate the range of research expertise and offer insights into innovative solutions to global challenges.The projects are the following:
The Sound of Entanglement - presented jointly by TU Wien, Johannes Kepler University Linz and the University of Innsbruck
Trans-Bodied Knowledge - presented jointly by TU Wien and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna
Focus on timber construction, quantum physics and medical technology
Austria’s pioneering role in timber construction is underlined by an innovative wooden music band in front of the pavilion, which was developed in collaboration with BWM Designers & Architects, Prof. Peter Bauer (TU Wien) and Graf Holztechnik. This project symbolizes the combination of creativity and technical expertise. In the "Year of Quantum Physics", TU Wien is also demonstrating its cutting-edge expertise with two projects that impressively show the synergy between art and science. In addition, Austria’s excellence in biotechnology and medical technology is highlighted by pioneering research projects and innovative start-ups.Networking and international presence
TU Wien is represented with a significant number of projects in the "Innovation Lab" of the Austria Pavilion, which features a total of 89 projects. "This presence strengthens the international visibility of TU Wien and consolidates its position as a future-oriented research and technology hub," says Iris Mach. The event provides an opportunity to present research and technology developments to an international audience and to promote exchange with universities, research institutions and companies. In addition, existing collaborations, especially with Japanese partners, can be further intensified and new scientific and business contacts can be established. Japanese students and researchers are also an important target group that can be made aware of Austria as an attractive location for study and research.Over 28 million visitors from all’over the world are expected, with up to 12,000 visitors per day to the Austria Pavilion.
