Matthias Koschutnik awarded with EACVI Research Grant 2025

Matthias Koschutnik, a Cardiology Resident at the Medical University of Vienna, has received the EACVI Research Grant 2025. This highly competitive prize was awarded during the Inaugural Session of the Euroecho-Imaging Congress in Berlin by the Executive Committee of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI). The grant enables Matthias Koschutnik to spend a year of research at the renowned Barts Heart Centre (University College London).

The project "Reverse cardiac remodeling and mid-term outcomes in aortic regurgitation undergoing valve replacement" aims to investigate pathophysiological mechanisms of severe aortic regurgitation and the predictors of myocardial and functional recovery after valve replacement. The optimal timing of intervention represents a significant challenge for treating physicians and is supported by limited data. Identifying novel imaging biomarkers, non-invasively quantified via cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and echocardiography, is crucial for elucidating the complex interplay between symptoms, reverse cardiac remodeling, reduced myocardial blood flow, and fibrosis.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with the Barts Heart Centre (BHC) at University College London under the supervision of Thomas A. Treibel. The BHC hosts one of the largest CMR programmes in Europe and is renowned for its clinical and scientific excellence. The EACVI Research Grant enables Matthias Koschutnik to spend a year at BHC supporting the London-based research group.

About the person

Matthias Koschutnik studied Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna from 2012 to 2018, during which he completed several stays abroad at prestigious institutions, including Johns Hopkins University, the University of Heidelberg and the University of Sydney. Since 2015, he has been a research associate at the Division of Cardiology (working group: Julia Mascherbauer / Philipp E. Bartko) at the Department of Medicine II, Medical University of Vienna. His research focuses on optimizing the integration of cardiac imaging with interventional procedures for treating valvular heart disease. His work has already been published as both first and co-author in renowned Cardiology journals and has earned him awards at national and international specialist conferences. Since April 2021, he has been training as a specialist in Cardiology.
