The team prepares the Bongo, a special device consisting of two nets, for his first time in the water.
The Crew of the University of Vienna has been on board the "Sonne" for over two weeks now. Soon they will cross the equator, going from the South Pacific into the North Pacific, where Phd student Maria Pinto is searching for and studying plastic particles in the ocean. In the last decades plastic has come to terrorize the ecosystems. However, they also seem to be a new home for microscopic organisms that attach to this intruder. I am on board the "Sonne" to collect plastic from the South and North Pacific and to study the diversity of microorganisms at different locations and to understand more about their lifestyle. Until now I have only sampled the South Pacific, but soon we will pass the equator and I will be able to sample in the North Pacific. To collect plastics from surface waters I am using a special device called Bongo net.
