Paul Supper, PhD candidate at MedUni Vienna and junior doctor at MedUni Vienna’s Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, received the Young Surgeons Award at the 63rd Austrian Conference of Surgeons.

Supper received the award for his study entitled -Multimodal Analysis of Muscle Regeneration Using Deep Learning Imaging - A Proof of Principle in Experimental Peripheral Nerve Injury.- This study is conducted in a corporation with the department of radiology and nuclear medicine and the center for biomedical physics and biomedical engineering. It investigates the development of muscle volume and glucose metabolism as functional markers of peripheral nerve regeneration using computed tomography, positron emission tomography and a Deep Learning algorithm. Early detection of the onset of muscle regeneration, or absence thereof, before the first clinical signs could support decisions about surgery, thus enabling patients to receive prompt and targeted treatment.
