Gabriele Fischer appointed to scientific committee of EUDA (European drug agency)

Gabriele Fischer, addiction expert at MedUni Vienna, has been appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the newly formed European Drug Agency EUDA. The committee advises the European Union on issues such as the strategic direction of all’aspects of addiction.

In July 2024, the new EU agency, EUDA (European Drug Addiction Agency), was founded. It emerged from the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA). The Agency’s mission is to contribute to the EU’s drug preparedness through four main actions: anticipate, warn, respond and learn.
The Scientific Advisory Board consists of 12 renowned EU scientists (plus Norway and Turkey) with an interdisciplinary research background; the experts advise the European Union on, among other things, the strategic direction of all’aspects of addiction.

About Gabriele Fischer

Gabriele Fischer is a consultant psychiatrist and neurologist and heads the addiction clinic at MedUni Vienna’s Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. For decades, she has dedicated herself to research in addiction, concentrating on the entire spectrum of SUD including behavioral addictions and associated comorbidities (eg ADHD, gender-specific & cultural aspects). In addition, her professional background includes to act as international human rights expert with a double affiliation at our University’s Center of Public Health, focusing also on socioecomic costs related to SUD.

Gabriele Fischer advises WHO and UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime), is Project Leader for numerous EU & NIH projects and, in addition to her international activities (like setting up a treatment program for opioid-dependent women in Afghanistan), nationally she also serves as a member of the Supreme Health Council of the Austrian Republic.
