FFG funding for MR project in radiation oncology

Wolfgang Lechner and Ivo Rausch receive extensive funding for a research project via the BRIDGE framework program of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG.

Wolfgang Lechner from the Department of Radiation Oncology as Principal Investigator and his colleague Ivo Rausch from the Center for Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at MedUni Vienna have been awarded funding for the project "MR-visible plastics in radiation oncology (MR-VIPRO)". The industrial partner is IT-V Medizintechnik GmbH.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging plays an important role in modern radiation oncology due to the better soft tissue contrast compared to computer tomography (CT). Current research is focusing on so-called MR-only workflows, which make CT imaging superfluous for treatment planning. A particular challenge is the transfer of the patient’s position from planning imaging to treatment. MR-visible materials are required for this. The Medical University of Vienna holds a patent for a light-curable resin that can generate a magnetic MR imaging signal.
Wolfgang Lechner and Ivo Rausch received this funding as part of an FFG BRIDGE program to research applications of this MR-visible resin in radiation oncology together with IT-V Medizintechnik GmbH.
