BB: Claudia Mayr-Veselinovic: Attribution and handling of homosexuality and gender identity
Sexism, chauvinism, male superiority and, despite all theory, the prevailing patriarchy with all its rules and norms form the outer framework of this presentation. Thus, the inner is also determined: right to control marginalized groups in their behaviour, ways of dressing and acting is a very common phenomenon in pop and rock music, since the 70’s and 80’s are one of the most productive decades for Yugoslav pop and rock music; it’s hardly surprising that the soundtrack of a generation, that lives a live relatively free of repression, social (class) boundaries and monetary issues, targets homosexuality and gender identity. Over all, little or no attention is paid to sexual orientations outside heteronormativity, but these are actually quite profound, meant as warnings as in Retko te vidam sa devojkama (Idoli 1980), talking about the struggle of gender identity in Mentalno (Elektricki orgazam, 1992) or "self-attribution" as in Magnifico’s Halo, gospodicna (2001). The talk will focus on different ways of self-attribution and attribution by others made visible in songs and the (non) reactions of public authorities, critics and the audience.
