At the Center for Energy we are committed to creating cutting-edge solutions for tomorrow’s transportation and energy challenges. Our key projects focus on the exciting world of future transportation systems, including e-mobility, energy consumption, and energy systems. We aim to understand and improve the impact of (e-)mobility on the energy system, helping to shape a sustainable future and contribute to the European Union’s climate goals.

As a PhD candidate, you will have the unique opportunity to tailor your research topic based on your expertise, interests, and ongoing research. Your main goal will be to develop AI-based methods to create surrogate functions, speeding up evaluation processes during optimisation approaches. This work will directly contribute to the creation of a resilient and sustainable transport network and efficient electric vehicle charging management.

CENTER FOR ENERGY


  • Advance statistical models related to user behaviour, charging strategies, and vehicle usage, integrating them into comprehensive mobility and energy system models.
  • Develop and apply new methods, conduct large-scale simulations, and analyse data to provide critical decision support for the mobility and energy revolution.
  • Interpret results and offer impactful recommendations for policymakers to advance climate targets, focusing on decarbonising the mobility sector.


  • Forecast the impacts of the (e-)mobility sector on the energy sector from 2030 to 2050.
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate studies independently, prepare results for documentation and presentation, and contribute to influential research outcomes.
  • Contribute to a sustainable future by presenting your findings at international conferences and publish in esteemed journals, gaining recognition in your field.


Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:
  • You have a completed master’s studies (MSc.) in Computer Science, Traffic Telematics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or similar.
  • You are passionate about Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Combinatorial Optimisation.
  • You possess top programming skills in one programming language (Python or R or Java, etc.)
  • You enjoy solving problems, have a team-oriented hands-on approach, and are focused on creating impactful solutions.
  • You value teamwork and colleagues with an open and collaborative mindset, and you love delving into interdisciplinary topics
  • You are proficient in English; German language skills are a plus.

What to expect:
EUR 2.684,10 gross per month (14 times / year), for 30 h / week. Plus AIT’s excellent research infrastructure and numerous trainings in scientific work for your personal and professional development.
