The advertised position is located at the Department of Philosophy which is part of the Faculty of Philosophy and Education. The Department of Philosophy at the University of Vienna is large in international comparison and its members are active within a considerable variety of research areas. The department furthermore offers a range of courses reflecting the breadth of the fields of philosophy while upholding the highest standards within each specialized subject area. Special focus is placed on gaining insight and developing competences in order to contribute to the discussion of current philosophical problems. This intention to acknowledge new philosophical developments and tasks is reflected in a number of co-operations and research fields of the department.

Duration of employment: 6 year/s

Extent of Employment: 20 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement : §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
The successful candidate will actively participate in research, teaching and administration at the Department of Philosophy in the field of European Philosophy (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Violetta Waibel).

Participation in publishing-projects concerned with the research field around Kant and its impact on the 20th/21st century, as well as the thematic complex of aesthetics in Kant and in modernity, will be the main emphasis.
It is also expected, that the university assistant postdoc will participate in the organization of workshops, conferences etc. related to the field. Writing a habilitation thesis (as a monograph or as a cumulative thesis) in the field of Classic German Philosophy (Theoretical Philosophy, Philosophy of Language) is desired.

The number of teaching hours is regulated by the collective bargaining agreement.

Areas of work:

Active participation in research, teaching and administration. This involves
  • Developing and strengthening the independent research profile
  • Involvement in research projects / research studies
  • International publications and presentations
  • Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding
  • Preparing / writing a (publication-ready) habilitation thesis
  • Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
  • Supervision of students
  • Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance
  • Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration

    Profile:
    To be successful, applicants must fulfil the following conditions:
  • PhD in philosophy
  • High command of written and oral English
  • Good international network
  • Appropriate teaching experience
  • IT user skills (MS-Office) in order to participate in publishing projects
  • Excellent German and/or English language skills for editorial collaboration
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • The willingness to acquire, within three years from the point of appointment, a command of the German language that is sufficient to teach at the Bachelor- and Master-level and to participate in university committees
  • Ability to decipher manuscripts (especially the 18th and 19th centuries) would be desirable

    In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have
  • Teaching experience / experience of working with e-learning
  • Experience of working on research projects
  • Publications in renowned, subject-relevant media (peer-reviewed, depending on the professional standards)
  • International presentation experience

    Desirable qualifications are
  • Knowledge of university processes and structures
  • Experience abroad
  • Experience of supervising students
