Senior Program Officer for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Health Solutions for Development

Our growing team of motivated experts is currently implementing a new strategy. The management office in Basel is the hub of our activities, responsible for the implementation of projects and programs together with partners in selected countries.


Job Context

Fondation Botnar aims to fund and support work in its focus areas in urban environments across seven to ten countries. To promote child health and wellbeing, as well as improve access to health care, the foundation builds on the enormous potential of digital health solutions and artificial intelligence designed to reduce health inequalities and advance health provision, particularly at the community systems level. In so doing, we harness the unprecedented momentum of the era of digital transformation. We are commencing this journey and plan to develop our country strategies via an emerging network of learning hubs across the world, where innovative solutions for child health and wellbeing can be tested, implemented and supported for scaling up and out.

Job Description

Reporting to the Chief Program Officer (CPO), the Senior Program Officer for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Health Solutions for Development will:

  • Technically support Fondation Botnar’s existing partnership and project portfolio
  • Liaise with new partners from the AI/digital science & technology sector and link them to country projects and programs
  • Assist in technical feasibility assessments as well as the implementation of business plans
  • Support partnership and project monitoring and evaluation
  • Support research project assessments; assist in preparing research calls related to AI/digital science & technology

Specific Responsibilities

  • Support in-country assessments of local ecosystems and the entrepreneurial capabilities of potential partners in AI/digital health
  • Seek new opportunities and partnerships for large-scale implementation of AI/digital health solutions, both public and private; assist in technical discussions in the academic sector
  • Assist in assessing local feasibility and challenges, including political and regulatory environments
  • Foster tri-sector collaborations and support management of multi-stakeholder partnerships
  • Develop Fondation Botnar policies and guidelines, according to the “Nine Principles for Digital Development” or similar guidelines, and assure their implementation in programs and activities
  • Liaise with multilateral organisations such as WHO, UNICEF, ITU and others, as well as international bilateral development agencies
  • Prepare regular analysis and progress reports as well as liaise with internal and external communications
  • Assist our impact assessment team with data generation and analysis for monitoring and evaluation
  • Represent Fondation Botnar at relevant public events and forums
  • Perform any other duties as assigned



  • Post-graduate degree in public health, development sciences, or engineering and technology
  • At least seven years’ work experience in an AI/digital science & technology organisation, preferably in e-health or m-health, and three years’ work experience in a developing or transition country context
  • Work experience in the private sector
  • Strong existing network in AI/digital science & technology – SMEs and multinationals
  • Extensive experience in innovation and project management
  • Familiarity with monitoring and evaluation methodologies
  • Experience in remote working contexts with team members and partners
  • Skilled in analysis of socio-economic and political dynamics; knowledge of human rights and ethics an advantage

Desired Q ualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Advanced degree (PhD or Master) in technology field (engineering, informatics, biotechnology), with specialisation in AI/digital science & technology
  • Strong track record in the regulatory field of AI/digital science & technology, preferably in different country contexts
  • Work experience in government, multilaterals or not-for-profits

  • Outstanding technical knowledge in the field of AI/digital science & technology
  • Ability to liaise with different stakeholders from diverse institutional backgrounds

  • Ability to communicate and work with a diverse set of stakeholders, including staff, board members, local and global grantee partners from multiple cultural settings etc.
  • Strong initiative and commitment to meeting agreed goals and objectives
  • Strong writing and editing skills in English; knowledge of German; French and Spanish an advantage
