Each year, around 45,000 people in Austria are newly diagnosed with cancer. These are 45,000 personal stories and just as many reasons to take part in the Cancer Research Run of MedUni Vienna. The goal of this year’s charity event: running 45,000 kilometers - one for each new diagnosis! Donations from participants, partners, and sponsors will go 100 percent toward cancer research projects at the Medical University of Vienna. The 18th Cancer Research Run will take place on Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Participants in the MedUni Vienna Cancer Research Run can complete as many laps as they like at their own pace on the 1.6-kilometer course around the University Campus Altes AKH. Additionally, participants can join remotely by choosing a route in the Distant-Run mode. Registration is available online at www.krebsforschungslauf.at with a donation. Spontaneous participants can also sign up directly at the event.

Cancer Mortality is Declining Thanks to Research

In Austria, around 45,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year, with men being slightly more affected than women. For both genders, malignant tumors are the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. Although the number of new cases has been rising over the past two decades, cancer mortality has been decreasing. Five-year survival rates have significantly improved in recent years: from 54% during the diagnosis period of 1992 to 1996, to 62% between 2014 and 2018 (Source: Statistics Austria 2024). This positive trend is largely due to advances in cancer medicine. Basic research continues to improve diagnostic and treatment methods, while enabling new approaches in treatment and prevention.

Donations Support Innovative Research Projects

All funds raised through the MedUni Vienna Cancer Research Run go directly to research projects at MedUni Vienna. Currently, 14 ongoing projects are being funded with donations, focusing on the development of targeted, personalized therapies within the field of precision medicine.
