Harald Kittler takes over professorship in the field of Dermatology

Harald Kittler took up a professorship (§99.4) in the field of Dermatology at the beginning of December. The head of the early detection outpatient clinic at the Department of Dermatology is a proven expert in the field of machine learning for skin cancer diagnosis and in research into collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence.

Harald Kittler’s work is primarily concerned with imaging techniques in dermatology and focuses on the use of machine learning in the diagnosis of skin cancer and on research into collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence (AI). He is also coordinator of Block 26 (Dermatology) within the Medical Curriculum of the Medical University of Vienna and co-founder of the online platform for dermatology teaching and e-learning "Dermonaut". His innovative teaching approaches have been recognized with awards such as the "Best Teacher" prize. His aim is to use the latest advances in the field of artificial intelligence for practice-oriented applications in dermatology and to explore the opportunities and risks of this technology, particularly in collaboration with human experts.

Harald Kittler studied medicine in Vienna and completed his specialist training in dermatology and venereology with a specialization in dermatopathology. He is Head of the Early Detection Outpatient Clinic at the Department of Dermatology and has been an Associate University Professor since 2003. He also holds leading roles in the International Dermoscopy Society and the International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC), where he heads the terminology working group.

In 2016, he was awarded the Ferdinand von Hebra Prize by the Austrian Society of Dermatology for his outstanding contributions to dermato-oncology. In 2023, he received the Society’s Science Award for a study on reinforcement learning, which was published in Nature Medicine.
