Environmentally friendly solutions for aviation

TU Wien presented several research projects at the Farnborough International Airshow.

Once again this year, TU Wien took part in the Farnborough International Airshow as an exhibitor as part of the Austrian joint stand, which takes place every year in alternation with the Aero Salon in Paris. The focus was on new projects that the Research Unit of Machine Elements and Transmissions for Aviation and the Institute of Production Engineering and Photonic Technologies have acquired over the past year.

More sustainability through research

The focus here is on solutions that contribute to the reduction of emissions in air traffic. In addition to reduced CO₂ emissions, noise reduction is also a major issue here. The exFAN project focuses on the thermal management of innovative engines, while neoBLADE contributes to noise reduction through the innovative design of propeller blades. Other projects are dedicated to the further development of geared turbofan technology, which already makes it possible to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 20% and drastically reduce engine noise. As these solutions also offer increased economic efficiency, they are spreading rapidly. In the clean aviation project HEROPS , TU Wien is contributing the propeller gearbox for a hydrogen-based fuel cell drive. Projects at the Institute of Production Engineering and Photonic Technologiesare constantly contributing to the topic of lightweight construction in aviation.

Exchange at the Farnborough International Airshow

TU Wien is now an integral part of the Austrian pavilion. In addition to many international contacts, national contacts with the leading representatives of the national aerospace industry can be deepened further and further.In this way, representatives of ministries and research funding organisations were once again able to see for themselves the effectiveness of the funding provided.
